An MIT grad software specialist family member got one of these from Amazon for me to use to provide her with some massive amounts of data (from which she could directly utilize the data). Since then I have bought two more (one for my own use and the other for that of a friend). I expect to buy at least one more to provide means of storing genealogical data of a recently deceased cousin to facilitate that data being transferred to a qualified family genealogist (and eventually hopefully returned to me!).
My own use is to store (and directly access) my lifetime collection of pre-1960 music, which recently took 7+ months full-time to digitize. I can listen to this from any of 3 computers, one output thru my home stereo system. In addition to providing one of 3 places this music is stored, I can connect it to my Toshiba netbook (another Amazon purchase) connected to a transportable 530 watt shelf hifi (sorry, Amazon was temporarily out of stock on this one!) and play DJ to senior centers, assisted living facilities, etc. For this purpose, I was replacing an older, smaller capacity ehd (different mfr) which had required reformatting twice in as many months. Used with iTunes, I can immediately access and play any of some 13,000 tracks (artist, genre, title) in interactive situations.
